What exactly is eco-friendly lighting, anyways?

Much of what you may have heard about eco-friendly lighting has to do with fixtures that are Energy Star qualified.  While that’s definitely an important part, many fixtures can be energy efficient without carrying that designation, and others might be ‘green’ outside of the actual light source itself.  Luxalo only carries fixtures that are either energy-efficient, or manufactured using sustainable or recycled materials.

What do you mean by “Green Factor”?

Every product on our site must meet one or more of the following criteria, which correspond to the “Green Factor” attribute evaluated for each item (see example below).  We’re not here to tell you which fixture is “greenest”, nor decide what should be the most important consideration.  We simply tell you why a particular item is eco-friendly using as much information as we have available, so that you can make a decision based on what's most important to you. 

Energy Star

This designation is for any fixture or bulb that has formally qualified for Energy Star status from the EPA, which administers the program.  In simple terms, Energy Star home lighting fixtures generally use ¼ the energy of traditional ones, with a lamp life of between 10,000 – 50,000 hours, or seven to twenty-two years of regular use (for specific requirements, visit the EnergyStar.gov website).

Energy Efficient

Not all energy efficient fixtures are Energy Star qualified, for several reasons.  As there is a cost to submit items for Energy Star consideration, not all lighting manufacturers seek qualification.  Also, many new products may not have gone through the process, including fixtures that use rapidly-evolving LED technology.  Products utilizing fluorescent or LED light sources that are not Energy Star qualified are identified on the site by this designation.

Eco-Friendly Materials

While the use of an energy efficient light source is critical to conserving energy, there are a growing number of fixtures that may utilize recycled or eco-friendly materials in their composition (e.g. recycled steel, sustainably-harvested bamboo), and/or were manufactured in a way to minimize impact to the environment.  Fixtures that are made from 50% or more recycled materials, and/or were made in an environmentally-responsible manner are recognized by this designation, regardless of the light source.

What does “Eco-Friendliness” Mean?

While a general “Green Factor” classification is a helpful guide, we feel it’s important to be as specific as we can. Located under the “Details” tab of any product page (see right, underneath "Green Factor"), the “Eco-Friendliness” section explains in further detail why a particular fixture or bulb may be eco-friendly.

What is Dark Sky Compliant?

Supported by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), outdoor fixtures that meet this designation do not project light upwards into the evening skies, but downward to illuminate its intended subjects only.  This prevents unnecessary “light trespass”, or light pollution, from reaching the evening skies, avoiding night sky glare.  For fixtures that meet this designation, compliance is typically referenced in the “Eco-Friendliness” section of any product detail page.
